Balfour Beatty, a leading UK infrastructure contractor, has deployed Microsoft 365 Copilot across its 27,000-strong workforce to improve efficiency and project safety. The AI tool helps eliminate rework, a major contributor to safety mishaps in construction, and automates tasks using natural language prompts. Balfour Beatty’s Chief Information Officer, Jon Ozanne, highlights the benefits of eliminating rework, citing its impact on time, cost, and health and safety implications.
The AI assistant provides immediate project history access, previously requiring manual searches through various systems. This has transformed meeting administration, with project teams reporting altered planning, problem-solving, and meeting dynamics. Early user surveys reveal significant productivity enhancements, with 75% of users finding Copilot enhances their work, and 77% spending less mental effort on routine tasks.
Jon Ozanne expects Microsoft to introduce task-specific AI agents within a year for construction’s “middle office” needs. The deployment of Microsoft 365 Copilot leverages existing infrastructure without necessitating new system integrations. Jon Ozanne believes AI will enable Balfour Beatty to aggregate and use data to understand how to positively impact the surrounding environment. Ultimately, this technology is expected to reduce human risk, costs, and errors in construction.
