Heatherwick Studio has transformed a 1950s industrial building in King’s Cross, London, into its own office, designed to foster a sense of community among its teams. The studio’s partner, Neil Hubbard, explains that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of togetherness, prompting them to create a space that encourages collaboration and creativity.
The office features a ground floor open-plan space with a workshop and models of previous projects. The first floor contains the main office space with flexible desk arrangements and eclectic collections. The top floor is an events space hosting lectures and educational programs.
“We wanted to create a temple of values,” Hubbard said. “We saw the potential in the layering to tell a different story on every level.” The studio made minimal alterations to the building’s exterior, adding glazing and full-height doors to engage with the public.
The office design aligns with the studio’s Humanise campaign, promoting active and interesting streets. “Making is such an important part of our culture,” Hubbard said. “Prioritising that on display is an important part of our identity.”
