Chandak Group has unveiled one of Mumbai’s tallest vertical murals on an SRA rehabilitation tower in Borivali East, integrating public art with urban redevelopment to reinforce the social impact of affordable housing projects.
Spread across approximately 15,000 sq. ft. and extending from the 13th to the 34th floor, the artwork transforms the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building into a prominent visual landmark while symbolising dignity, homeownership and community upliftment.
Created by creative studio ZA Works, the mural was completed by a team of 16 artists and technicians over 270 hours. The artwork portrays a young girl holding a golden key before a keyhole opening into a vibrant landscape, representing the transition of families from informal settlements to secure housing.
From an urban infrastructureperspective, the initiative reflects an evolving approach to redevelopment where placemaking, public art and community identity are increasingly integrated into housing projects. The mural was unveiled ahead of National Mural Day, highlighting the growing role of creative interventions in enhancing the visual identity of large-scale rehabilitation developments.
According to Chandak Group, the initiative aims to reinforce the emotional significance of homeownership while creating a sense of pride among residents. The company said redevelopment extends beyond physical construction to restoring dignity and improving the quality of life for rehabilitated communities.
Over the past three years, Chandak Group has delivered more than 80 lakh sq. ft. of development across Mumbai, handing over 7,616 homes, including 3,500 SRA rehabilitation units. The developer plans to deliver another 1,508 rehabilitation homes in the coming year, with over 3,000 SRA units currently under various stages of development.
The project underscores the growing emphasis on inclusive urban renewal, where infrastructure development is increasingly complemented by design, cultural expression and community-focused initiatives that enhance the overall quality of redevelopment projects.
