AOC Architecture has transformed the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, introducing 1,000m² of new Sound and Vision galleries and a reconfigured public foyer. The £6.8 million masterplan aims to enhance the visitor experience, improve accessibility, and reduce the museum’s environmental impact.
The revamped museum features a new double-height space connecting the Sound and Vision galleries, showcasing over 500 exhibits, including vintage cameras, early video consoles, and interactive displays. The design incorporates natural materials, such as timber and recycled materials, to minimize embodied carbon and create a welcoming atmosphere.
The project has prioritized accessibility, with a new lift connecting all eight floors and a participatory design process involving local organizations and accessibility groups. The museum’s foyer has been transformed into a vibrant public space, overlooking City Park and hosting events and exhibitions.
The Sound and Vision galleries explore the evolution of photography, film, television, and gaming, featuring immersive scenes and interactive exhibits. A site-specific artwork, Circus by Nayan Kulkarni, uses live cameras and digital mirrors to create a unique experience.
