Kerala’s latest architectural marvel, The Lord’s House, is redefining the concept of minimalism in church design. Designed by Bhoomija Creations, this chapel is a bold departure from traditional Kerala church architecture, embracing simplicity and subtlety.
Located in Kollam District, The Lord’s House serves as a chapel for the Malankara Orthodox Church and the local community. The building’s octagonal form is an unusual choice for a church, but it provides a compact, intimate space that fosters a sense of community and peace.
The architects, Guruprasad Rane and Manasi Puliyappatta, have distilled the design into three key concepts: peace, community, and sanctuary. These qualities are achieved through thoughtful architectural interventions, including scale, material selection, and lighting.
The minimalist altar design focuses on a single cross and a circular light, creating a sense of serenity. The building’s exposed brickwork, concrete floor, and wooden joinery add to the sense of simplicity and honesty.
Natural light plays a crucial role in the design, with cross-shaped cutouts in the high walls allowing sunlight to flood the interior. This thoughtful design choice creates a moment of serenity and drama, highlighting the beauty of minimalism.
“The Lord’s House is a space where spirituality is experienced not in excess but in thoughtful design that honors both the natural world and the human spirit,” explains Bhoomija Creations.
