Bijoy Jain, a Mumbai-based architect, has renovated the Château de Beaucastel winery in France’s Rhône Valley. The project aimed to reflect the terroir of the famed vineyard while incorporating sustainable practices. Jain’s design used 90% on-site materials, including rammed earth and recycled limestone, to create a structure that blends with the surroundings.
The Perrin family, who own the winery, wanted a building that would “co-exist with parts of the old structure” and “pay homage to the wine itself.” The new winery features gravity-flow reception, individual fermenters, and underground galleries that utilize the mistral wind to cool the cellar.
The project was a collaboration between Jain’s Studio Mumbai and French architect Louis-Antoine Grégo. The result is a “timeless” space that feels like it has “always been there,” according to Charles Perrin, co-owner of Château de Beaucastel.
