The first building in Western Sydney’s Bradfield City Centre, designed by architecture firm Hassell, has won the 2025 Holdmark Innovation Award. The award recognizes innovation and excellence in the built environment. The building, known as First Building, houses the first stage of an Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) and features a modular design that can be disassembled, expanded, or relocated as the city evolves.
The facility includes offices, a multipurpose space, a rooftop viewing platform, and an advanced manufacturing hall. The building’s design prioritizes sustainability, adaptability, and community, setting a benchmark for future city development. The building features extensive glazing, allowing for views both in and out, and a green roof.
The jury praised the building’s commitment to Country-centred design, sustainability, and innovation, noting that it demonstrates a circular, low-carbon path that creates skilled jobs and new enterprise in Western Sydney. According to Hassell managing director Liz Westgarth, “The First Building provides more than a place for people to work and innovate โ it sets a benchmark. It demonstrates that new cities can be imagined and built differently: with sustainability, adaptability and community at their core.”
