Spanish designer Lucas Muñoz has transformed a former 1960s office building in Madrid into CoLab, a hybrid showroom and workspace for furniture brand Sancal. The 300-square-metre space reuses materials from the original office, promoting circularity and reducing waste.
Muñoz’s team dismantled the existing office, restoring original terrazzo floors and concrete columns, and repurposing materials like fluorescent lights, aluminium partitions, and steel pedestals. The result is a vibrant, playful space showcasing Sancal’s furniture, with areas for seating, meeting, and working.
“The office’s modular material approach allowed us to dismantle and re-consider each piece as a potential intervention element,” said Lucas Muñoz, Principal, Lucas Muñoz Studio. “Very little demolition was required, meaning recovered pieces could be evaluated according to their impact to decide if they must stay or if they could be recycled.”
CoLab’s design demonstrates the potential for circular design in transforming existing spaces. Muñoz’s approach emphasizes the importance of reusing materials and reducing waste in the design process.
