The Madison Metropolitan School District is preparing to gather community input on the interior designs of new school buildings as part of a $507 million referendum approved by voters last year. The district has completed site surveying and geotechnical drilling and is now finalizing schematic designs for the first phase of projects. According to Scott Chehak, the district’s senior executive director of building services, “We’ve identified the shell of the building, the exterior look and feel to the environment and the neighboring community.”
The district plans to roll out the projects in three phases over the next four years, with phase one including Shabazz City High School, Sherman Middle School, Black Hawk Middle School, and Gompers Elementary School. Community engagement sessions are scheduled for September 23 and 24, where residents and staff can provide feedback on the designs.
The renovation and reconstruction efforts aim to modernize critical infrastructure, improve heating and cooling systems, enhance accessibility and sustainability, and create learning environments that support creativity and innovation. Chehak said the goal is to create school buildings that are “fully modernized โ designed with sustainability, accessibility and community use in mind.”
