KMM Architects has won the international design competition to design Finland’s new Museum of Architecture and Design in Helsinki. Their proposal, known as Kumma, was chosen from 624 entries submitted worldwide. The museum will be a 10,050-square-meter cultural institution built on Helsinki’s South Harbor waterfront, with construction set to begin in 2027 and completion planned for 2030.
JKMM’s design integrates into the historic cityscape while standing out as a recognizable public building. The compact building preserves views from Tähtitorninvuori Park and features a large sea-facing terrace that continues as an outdoor gallery and balcony. The jury commended JKMM’s design for its ability to blend in and assert itself as a landmark.
The museum will host exhibitions, a design library, and public amenities, furthering its mission of democratizing design tools. Set to open in 2030, the museum will bring together over 900,000 artefacts, including works by Aino and Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen, and contemporary brands like Marimekko and Nokia. The building will be a hub for design enthusiasts and the community, showcasing Finland’s rich design heritage.
