Pioneering Eco-Friendly Aviation Infrastructure
Noida International Airport (Jewar Airport) has emerged as one of the first airports in India to deploy low-emission certified furniture and workstations across its 1,00,000 sq m terminals and back office areas as per a press release. This initiative is part of the airport’s ambition to become India’s first net-zero airport through clean energy, efficient design, and low-impact operations.
The airport has installed over 6,000 furniture systems, including public seating and lounge systems, modular workstations, control desks, and specialized installations, all made from low-emission materials. The furniture is 66 percent recyclable and carries a 115.43 kg CO2e cradle-to-gate carbon footprint, critical to serving the airport’s expected 12 million annual passengers.
Sustainable Innovations
“The Jewar airport is not just a project of scale, but one of intent. Every element is designed to perform consistently, sustainably, and under pressure. Notably, the low-emission furniture contributes to a large chunk of the airport’s net-zero ambition, reducing the emission from a standard 20% to less than 5%,” said Maanoj Tomar, Founder, AFC Furniture Solutions.
Eco-Friendly Design
The airport’s design, led by a global consortium of Nordic, Grimshaw, Haptic, and STUP, reflects a blend of Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality, with architecture inspired by local elements such as ghats and havelis. The furniture, manufactured in an Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Gold-rated facility, meets stringent compliance and sustainability benchmarks.
Operational Efficiency
The airport features modular workstations and ergonomic control desks designed for high-frequency use and endurance, enabling continuous use while maintaining comfort, efficiency, and safety in high-pressure environments. Travellers will experience tech-enabled seating and lounge environments built to balance comfort with efficiency.
