Japanese studio SANAA has completed its largest cultural project to date, the Taichung Green Museumbrary in Taiwan. Set to open in December, the 58,016-square-meter building combines an art museum and city library, spread across eight interconnected blocks with winding walkways. Designed in collaboration with Taiwanese firm Ricky Liu and Associates, the “museumbrary” aims to immerse visitors in the surrounding natural landscape.
The building’s transparency is achieved through glass and metal walls wrapped in a veil of aluminum mesh. According to SANAA, the design combines the museum and library to create a multifaceted learning space, linking the two entities to foster learning and communication. Each block is raised on columns, creating access routes from all directions, and features an accessible rooftop with views of the park and city skyline.
The Taichung Public Library will house over 1,000,000 books, while the Taichung Art Museum will focus on supporting local artists and connecting Taiwan to the international art scene. This project marks a significant milestone for SANAA, which recently won the prestigious Royal Gold Medal awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
