The Shakti Design Residency, founded by interior architect Shalini Misra, brings emerging design talent and Indian craftspeople together for cultural exchange and collaboration. The inaugural edition’s five standout pieces are on display at Alcova during Milan design week.
The residency aims to promote global recognition of Indian artisanship, which Misra believes remains underrepresented in contemporary design. “For many, Made in India does not immediately bring to mind exceptional skill, innovation or contemporary problem solving,” she says.
The showcased pieces include:
– Nadi Table: Designed by Luca Gruber and Vikram Goyal Studio, featuring semi-precious stones and hammered brass legs inspired by ancient Hindu philosophy.
– Vista Collection: Created by Kickie Chudikova and Klove Studio, translating Mughal architecture into layered glass lighting designs.
– Celestial Manual Light: Developed by Duyi Han and Tarun Tahiliani, featuring intricate embroidery inspired by Indian wedding skirts.
– Sahasra and Viveka Rugs: Designed by Helena Bajaj-Larsen and Jaipur Rugs, combining hand-painted silk work with traditional rug-making techniques.
– Woven Raffia Panel: Crafted by Aya Kawabata and the Chanakya School of Craft, showcasing dynamic patterns and textures.
Misra hopes the residency will prompt thought and discussion about Indian culture, craft, and design. Applications for the 2025 Shakti Design Residency will open soon, with residencies taking place in November 2025.
