The British Museum has selected Lebanese firm Lina Ghotmeh Architecture to redesign its Western Range galleries. The galleries, consisting of 10 buildings, house a collection spanning thousands of years, including ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, Assyria, and the Middle East.
Lina Ghotmeh, the multi-award-winning architect, will lead the renovation, which aims to create a modern museum experience with interactive and digital elements. The design will unify the disjointed buildings, improve flow, and upgrade the space for a contemporary audience.
Ghotmeh’s vision is to create a “living museum” where historic narratives intertwine with contemporary perspectives. The design features an open courtyard with artefacts displayed in gravel-covered grid squares, echoing an archaeological dig. Sustainability and natural materials are also integral to the design.
The renovation will be implemented in stages to minimize disruption to the museum’s operations. The final design approach is expected to be shared by mid-2026.
