City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has unveiled plans to develop a 20-acre global trade and diplomacy hub in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, featuring hotels, serviced apartments, a large convention centre, and exhibition spaces as part of the proposed Africa India International Development Zone (AIIDZ).
Integrated Trade and Hospitality Ecosystem
The proposed development will form a self-contained business district within the International Corporate Park, drawing inspiration from global hubs such as the Dubai World Trade Centre.
The project will include a 6,000-seat convention centre, approximately 2.5 lakh sq ft of exhibition space, retail zones, and delegate facilities designed to host international summits, trade fairs, and business events throughout the year.
Hotels and serviced apartments will play a central role in supporting MICE demand, positioning the project as a key hospitality and business destination in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Strategic Location Advantage
Located near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), the hub is strategically placed to leverage global trade connectivity. The location is expected to enhance accessibility for international delegates and business travellers.
Diplomatic and Commercial Presence
At the core of the development will be a central business tower housing permanent office spaces for all 54 African nations, alongside Indian public and private sector entities. This is aimed at creating a long-term diplomatic and commercial ecosystem in Navi Mumbai.
A key highlight of the project will be the Africa-India Bio Dome, envisioned as a signature space for cultural, environmental, and innovation-led exchanges.
Project Structure and Timeline
The project will be executed through a special purpose vehicle, with the Africa India Economic Foundation holding a 74% stake and CIDCO retaining 26%. The land disposal proposal has already been submitted to the Maharashtra government, formally initiating development.
The AIIDZ is expected to become operational within six to eight years, with projected revenues of around USD 30 million by the sixth year.
Boost to Trade, Tourism and MICE
Officials noted that the project is designed to strengthen economic ties between India and African nations while boosting trade, tourism, and investment flows. The integrated infrastructure is expected to generate employment, support MSMEs, and enhance the regionโs positioning as a global business hub.
The development also reinforces the Mumbai Metropolitan Regionโs ambition to emerge as a key economic gateway for the Global South, with hospitality infrastructure playing a pivotal role in enabling large-scale international engagements.
