Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has selected Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to lead the design of its new arrivals and departures hall. The project is part of the airport’s multibillion-dollar Journey With AUS program, the most significant expansion in its history. SOM will collaborate with two Austin-based practices, Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and McKinney York Architects.
The multistory complex will consolidate and expand ticketing, security screening, baggage claim, concessions, and other services, while also enhancing curbside access and improving circulation. Designed to serve millions of travelers annually, the hall will aim to embody Austin’s character as much as its functionality.
“This project is about creating a more seamless, welcoming and distinctly Austin experience for every traveler,” said Ghizlane Badawi, Chief Executive Officer, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Scott Duncan, Design Partner, SOM, added that the hall carries immense potential to shape visitors’ perception of the city. “Together with our local partners, we’re designing a space that captures the soul of Austin while delivering the functionality of a next-generation airport.”
Michael Hsu and Al York, Founding Principal, McKinney York Architects, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the airport as a “front door” to the city. The design phase is now underway, with the hall expected to be completed in the early 2030s.
