The UK Government has announced the shortlist of five architecture firms competing to design a memorial to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The memorial will be located in St. James Park, London. The shortlisted teams are integrated and multidisciplinary, featuring architects, artists, landscape designers, and engineers.
The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, established in 2023, selected the shortlist. The committee comprises eight British public figures tasked with commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s “life of service” and creating “a space for pause and reflection.”
To be considered, each team submitted examples of similar projects and outlined the expertise of each contributor. The shortlisted teams include:
Foster + Partners, with artist Yinka Shonibare and landscape architect Michel Desvigne Paysagiste; Heatherwick Studio, collaborating with sculptor Halima Cassell, landscape designer MRG Studio, and engineering firms Webb Yates and Arup; J&L Gibbons, leading a team with set designer Michael Levine, architecture firm William Matthews Associates, and engineers Structure Workshop and Arup; Tom Stuart-Smith and Jamie Fobert Architects, working with artist Adam Lowe of Factum Arte and Structure Workshop; and WilkinsonEyre, partnering with artists Lisa Vandy and Fiona Clark, garden designer Andy Sturgeon, and engineers Atelier One and Hilson Moran.
The shortlisted teams will submit their design concepts for the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial this spring. A masterplan will be developed, and the Selection Panel will consider the submissions. The winning design team will be chosen by summer 2025, with a final design announcement in April 2026, close to what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday.
