Santosh Ghosh, a pioneering architect and urban planner, passed away on Saturday at 89. A former chief architect of the Calcutta Metropolitan Planning Organisation, Ghosh collaborated with Gordon Cullen in the 1960s to draft Kolkataโs master plan. Despite his eco-friendly proposal for the Rajarhat New Town Development remaining unrealized, it showcased his visionary approach to sustainable urban planning.
Born in Dhaka in 1935, Ghosh graduated with gold medals from Bengal Engineering College. His architectural passion extended beyond practice; he launched architecture magazines featuring icons like Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. He also taught at California Polytechnic State University and the University of Jordan, earning global acclaim as a professor.
Ghosh co-founded the Centre for Built Environment and chaired the Indian Institute of Architects’ West Bengal chapter. His insights into urban design, conservation, and renewable energy earned him international recognition. He mentored countless architects and played a key role in Kolkataโs Tri-Centenary celebrations.
Ghosh leaves behind his wife, Chinu, and daughters, Karpurika and Mayurika. His legacy as a thought leader and community builder continues to inspire generations in the architectural field.
