The Elizabeth Tower, home to the iconic Big Ben bell, has won a prestigious RIBA National Award for its comprehensive renovation by Purcell. The project was recognized for its exceptional conservation and craftsmanship, showcasing a masterclass in preserving the tower’s heritage while incorporating modern technologies and sustainable approaches.
The renovation included extensive updates to the external stonework, cast iron roof, and clock mechanism, as well as the installation of a lift and upgraded building services. The project team painstakingly examined and restored every element of the building fabric and clock workings, ensuring the tower’s preservation for future generations.
Key Highlights of the Renovation:
– Restoration of Clock Faces: The four clock faces were restored to their original Prussian blue and gold color scheme, replacing the 1980s black paint.
– Improved Timekeeping Accuracy: Repairs to the clock mechanism have improved the timekeeping accuracy.
– Sustainable Approaches: The project incorporated contemporary technologies and techniques to enable effective project coordination and implementation of sustainable approaches.

The Elizabeth Tower, along with other winners of the RIBA London Awards, will now be considered for the Stirling Prize.
