The final phase of Kansai International Airport’s (KIX) refurbished Terminal 1 has opened, ahead of the World Expo 2025 in Osaka. Designed by global firm Populous, the terminal’s renovation aimed to enhance efficiency and passenger experience. The project, spanning over seven years, completely reimagined the airport’s floor plan.
The new Terminal 1 features a 60% increase in international departure lounge and retail space, innovative retail layouts, and seamless processing. The design prioritized operational functionality, passenger convenience, accessibility, and sustainability. The renovation was completed in phases to ensure continued airport operations.
Key features include faster security inspections with smart lanes processing 4,500-6,000 passengers per hour and a new queuing management system. A new commercial area offers 13 stores and a street food court. The project has been recognized as a finalist in the 2023 World Architecture Festival Awards.
The redesign respected the original architecture while introducing new commercial opportunities. The terminal’s interior now features natural materials with a distinctly Japanese feel, while areas like the immigration hall offer an open, inspiring space.
“Kansai Airports and Populous crafted a design built upon operational functionality, passenger convenience, and sustainability,” said Brett Wightman, Populous Senior Principal and Director.
The airport expects to accommodate over 40 million passengers annually from 2025, with nearly double international capacity.
