The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced that the Mumbai Port Authority has allotted four bighas of prime land in Colaba, Mumbai, to the Government of Assam on a 60-year lease. This strategic allocation will enable Assam to develop crucial public infrastructure catering to the needs of its citizens, including healthcare facilities, educational institutions, welfare and social services, and potentially an incubation center for entrepreneurs. The development of these infrastructure projects will be tailored to the specific needs and aspirations of the people of Assam.
Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said, “This is a people-first initiative. By making this land available to the Government of Assam for 60 years, we are enabling the creation of critical infrastructure that will serve generations to come. The project will be developed in line with the needs and aspirations of the people of Assam. Located at the heart of Mumbai in Colaba, this will plug a big aspiration of the people of Assam to have an access in the Mumbai city that can serve the needs of people, be it patients, be it students or even entrepreneurs.”
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed deep satisfaction and appreciated the Government of India’s support, terming this step as a vital contribution to Assam’s growth story and a milestone in their shared commitment to improving the lives of the people. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making the Northeast a growth powerhouse driven by people’s empowerment. Mumbai being a financial hub, the development of this land parcel will provide entrepreneurs from Assam access to opportunities in the city.
