A stunning three-year renovation of a 1970s Malibu Ranch has transformed it into a stylish oasis. Alexander Design, in collaboration with Alexander Built Properties, has seamlessly blended vintage and modern elements in equal measure while staying true to sustainability. The five-bedroom, four-bathroom, 3,700-square-foot post-and-beam property, originally designed by late architect Ronald Goldman, is set amidst towering eucalyptus and oak trees.
The designer’s goal was to honor Goldman’s commitment to sustainability while modernizing the home. Key features include drought-tolerant landscaping, cross-ventilation, and skylit hallways that flood the home with natural light. The interior design combines modern furniture with vintage pieces, such as a De Sede sofa and Brazilian lounge chairs by Sergio Rodrigues, to create a luxurious and comfortable living space.
The renovation process was not without its challenges. “As with any renovation, there are always unexpected surprises,” says Vanessa Alexander, designer. “But rather than seeing these as setbacks, we embraced them as opportunities to refine the design in ways that felt organic to the home’s story.”
The bedrooms exude soul and personality, with bespoke pieces, including a custom-upholstered bed frame inspired by a 1960s Italian design. Lighting throughout the home is also noteworthy, with vintage European craftsmanship and pieces that not only illuminate but also tell a story.
The backyard has been transformed into an outdoor living space, anchored by vintage finds and framed by spectacular Tipuana trees. “We wanted the backyard to feel fully integrated into the landscape,” Alexander shares.
