Several academic institutions in Maharashtra have introduced bamboo as a subject in architecture and interior design courses, promoting sustainability and eco-friendly design practices. This initiative is led by the Konkan Bamboo and Cane Development Centre (KONBAC), which aims to promote entrepreneurship, research, and trade of high-quality bamboo products in a sustainable manner. Key institutions that have incorporated bamboo into their curricula include Fergusson College, Pune, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur.
The inclusion of bamboo in these courses enhances students’ understanding of sustainable materials and opens up new opportunities for bamboo farmers. For instance, Fergusson College’s Bachelor of Vocational Interior Design programme focuses on bamboo’s properties, design applications, and hands-on skills for crafting sustainable interior solutions. Similarly, Rashtrasant Tukadoji, Nagpur University’s Bachelor of Architecture course highlights the growing importance of bamboo in mainstream architectural education.
According to Sanjeev Karpe, Director of KONBAC, these initiatives will benefit bamboo farmers and contribute to the growth of sustainable practices in the region. By promoting the use of bamboo in architecture and design, these colleges are paving the way for a more eco-friendly future. The initiative also reflects the potential for bamboo to play a significant role in India’s sustainable development and environmental conservation efforts.
