MAD has introduced “Chinese Paper Umbrella,” an installation at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. The structure, inspired by traditional Chinese oil paper umbrellas, is made from Xuan paper treated with tung oil, providing a translucent and water-resistant finish. This outdoor installation transforms the ancient craft into a sheltered space, offering protection from rain and sun while adapting to its surroundings.
The installation’s semi-transparent surface and permeable seams allow it to remain connected to the ambient air and light. A built-in misting system cools the air below, enhancing visitor comfort on hot days. The Smart Dynamic Light (SDL) system from OPPLE Lighting responds to variations in sunlight and weather, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
As the oil paper naturally wears, turns yellow, and deteriorates over time, the structure’s impermanence becomes a poignant reflection on the relationship between buildings and nature in the face of climate change. The installation is on display at the China Pavilion in Venice until November 23, 2025.
