Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has broken ground on the 55,000-square-foot expansion of The Broad in Los Angeles. The addition will contain newly acquired works by artists such as Lauren Halsey, David Hammons, and Amy Sherald.
The expansion will grow The Broad’s footprint by 70 percent, matching the existing museum’s height with a distinct material. Elizabeth Diller, principal at DS+R, described the buildings as “siblings, not clones, with a shared DNA but expressing unique characteristics.”
The new space will feature smaller, focused galleries and serendipitous encounters with art in storage. The expansion is set to open in 2028, ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass attended the groundbreaking ceremony, stating, “As Los Angeles prepares to welcome the world for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, there is no better time to celebrate the launch of The Broad expansion.”
