The Abellon Waste-to-Energy Campus in Jamnagar, Gujarat, has achieved the distinction of being India’s first platinum-rated net-zero Green Waste-to-Energy Campus, awarded by the Indian Green Building Council. Designed by INI Design Studio, the 7825 sqm campus converts 2,20,000 tons/year of Municipal Solid Waste into 7.5 MW of clean energy, enough to power 15,000 homes.
The campus features a simple, open-span, lightweight prefab recycled steel structure with a translucent, recyclable multilayered polycarbonate façade system. The design optimizes process flow, minimizes surface-to-volume ratio, and reduces operational costs and energy consumption. Water conservation and landscaping are key focuses, with drought-tolerant species, treated municipal wastewater, and advanced mist turbine condenser cooling.
The project has received several awards, including the BIG 5 Global Impact Awards 2024 and the Indian Building Congress Award for excellence in built environment. The campus serves as a model for sustainable waste management and energy generation, while also providing social infrastructure like a jogging track, playfield, research, and community spaces.
