TV architect George Clarke plans to transform a Grade II listed property on High Street West, Sunderland, into a cultural hub called Home of Books. The project includes a bookshop, cafe, wine bar, and event space, combining Clarke’s love of books and restoration architecture.
The building’s upper floors will be converted into a four-bedroom apartment for Clarke and his family, as well as boutique accommodation for short stays. Sunderland City Council has approved the plans, stating it will “encourage footfall to the area, assist in creating a high-quality physical environment and contribute notably to the vibrancy and character of the Sunniside area”.
Clarke said, “Sunderland’s changing in brilliant ways, and I hope Home of Books can play a part in that, rooted in the city’s past, but open to new stories, new ideas and the people who bring them to life”.
The project involves restoring the original shopfront, altering openings, reinstating Georgian-style joinery, and remodelling the rear extension. A new refuse and cycle store will also be created.
