The newly built Terminal 2 (T2) at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has earned the International Architecture Award 2025 in the Transport category, celebrating its fusion of modern infrastructure, sustainable design, and cultural storytelling.
Unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, the Rs 2,000-crore terminal draws deeply from Assam’s natural and cultural heritage. Design elements reference bamboo, the foxtail orchid (state flower), and traditional motifs such as the Jaapi, while interior spaces pay homage to the Brahmaputra River, Majuli, and local craftsmanship.
Spanning 140,000 square meters, T2 will boost the airport’s capacity to 13.1 million passengers annually—six times its current limit. Built on four guiding principles—sustainability, passenger experience, digital innovation, and environmental responsibility—the terminal features a green roof, rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient lighting, indoor greenery, and abundant natural light.
Modern passenger conveniences include self-bag drop counters, Digi Yatra-enabled e-gates, advanced security, elevated traffic lanes, and extensive contact and remote stands to improve connectivity.
Set to open in late 2025 under the management of Adani Airport Holdings, T2 is designed not only as a gateway to Northeast India but also as an immersive introduction to Assam’s biodiversity, resilience, and traditions. This award cements its place as a landmark of architecture that bridges cultural heritage with future-ready aviation.
