Shibanee & Kamal Architects, a Bangalore-based studio, prioritizes gardens in its residential designs, shaping layout, massing, and project delivery. “Every single home we build has a garden – if it can’t have a garden, we won’t do it,” the practice said in an exclusive video interview with media.
Working in densely populated Bangalore, the studio incorporates greenery within constrained urban sites using spatial strategies like staggered layouts and duplexes. Gardens are essential to how homes are planned and experienced, making them feel like homes.
The studio’s approach led to establishing Total Environment, a construction and development arm, to control the full process. This ensures designs aren’t altered and allows for seamless synergy between architecture and construction.
Projects like Windmills of Your Mind, a high-rise residential development in Bangalore, showcase this approach, with extensive planting throughout the site. The studio’s emphasis on greenery stems from a personal relationship with nature, aiming to make buildings “overflow with nature and greenery.”
