In Philadelphia’s Center City neighborhood, development firm Scout and architecture studio ISA have created a pop-up bar that references an unbuilt design by architect Louis Kahn. Frankie’s Summer Club is situated in a courtyard passageway between two wings of Furness Hall on the former University of the Arts (UArts) campus.
The pop-up space features an arch made of purple extira panels and a yellow bar structure with a cubic metal base and a vinyl mesh-clad chimney reaching 25 feet into the air. Behind the bar, a seating area offers serpentine yellow seating and classic white plastic stacking chairs, where visitors can enjoy wines and food curated by local chef Michael Ferreri.
The design takes cues from Kahn’s 1964 unrealized plan for the UArts campus, which featured monumental forms clustered together like chimneys. Lindsey Scannapieco, MD, Scout, said, “Frankie’s Summer Club symbolizes a legacy of inspiration and connections on this site – to the generations of students that passed through the courtyard.”
