Sheffield City Council has appointed Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios to lead the restoration of the historic Sheffield Town Hall, a Grade I listed building. The project aims to address key issues such as accessibility, fire safety, and structural repairs while preserving the building’s historical features.
The town hall, opened by Queen Victoria in 1897, requires extensive repairs and renovation to secure its long-term future. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios is known for its work on schemes such as the transformation of the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings and Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.
Council leader Tom Hunt expressed delight that the project is moving forward, stating, “Our iconic and historic town hall is at the heart of Sheffield’s democracy and public life.” Geoff Rich, partner and director of heritage and creative reuse at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, said, “The project represents an exciting opportunity to complement the building’s unique heritage with inclusive and sustainable design.”
The restoration plan aims to balance heritage preservation with financial sustainability, with potential costs ranging from ยฃ20m to ยฃ50m. The council plans to secure funding through innovative strategies.
