The Giza Pyramids have undergone a significant upgrade with the installation of a new LED lighting system, enhancing the visitor experience while preserving the ancient structures. This modern, eco-friendly system was implemented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) in cooperation with the Spanish government. The new system uses “cool” lighting units that are completely safe for the original archaeological components used in the pyramids’ construction. Key features of the system include its energy efficiency, aligning with international standards for heritage preservation, and its ability to preserve the monument while enhancing sustainability.
The project, carried out by the SCA, aims to highlight the design of the interiors of the Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure pyramids. The lighting system covers all internal corridors, burial chambers, and other interior spaces of the three pyramids, adding to the visitor experience while fully preserving the archaeological character of the site. According to Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the SCA, “This modern system not only helps in preserving the monument, but also enhances the concepts of sustainability and provides a unique visual experience for visitors inside the pyramids, highlighting the beauty and precision of ancient Egyptian architecture.”
The upgrade is part of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ ongoing efforts to improve services at archaeological sites and museums, enhancing Egypt’s appeal as a cultural tourism destination. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, emphasized the goal is to enhance the visitor experience and the appeal of Egypt as a destination, particularly for cultural tourism, while adhering to international standards for heritage preservation.
