Compass Inc., the U.S. real estate giant that also operates Christie’s International Real Estate, has announced a USD1.6 billion all-stock deal to acquire Anywhere Real Estate, parent company of global brands including Century 21, Sotheby’s International Realty, and Coldwell Banker.
The transaction, which values the combined company at around USD 10 billion, will establish Compass as the largest residential real estate brokerage in the world, with a workforce of 340,000 agents across every major U.S. market and 120 international locations. Compass already leads the U.S. by sales volume, while Anywhere ranks second.
“This merger allows us to combine resources while preserving the independence of Anywhere’s brands. Together, we will build a platform where real estate professionals can thrive for decades,” said Robert Reffkin, CEO of Compass.
The megamerger comes as U.S. housing sales hover near 30-year lows. Despite the slowdown, Compass reported a 21% year-over-year transaction growth in Q2 2025, with revenue reaching USD 2.06 billion. By contrast, most rivals have struggled.
The company expects to save USD 255 million annually by streamlining operations and eliminating redundancies. Importantly, the deal also diversifies Compass’s revenue streams, adding over USD 1 billion from Anywhere’s franchise operations.
Industry analysts say the move highlights the growing advantage of megabrokerages with scale and brand power, as smaller independents face intensifying competition in a sluggish market.
