The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a major urban redevelopment project to transform the Municipal Sports Complex near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) into a contemporary Town Hall Gymkhana (THG), blending modern architecture with heritage preservation. The project aims to integrate public accessibility and sustainable tourism.
The THG will be a five-storey structure with rooftop viewing facilities, a dome-shaped observatory, and green architecture. Features include:
– A public restaurant
– A civic council hall
– An elevated glass capsule lift providing direct access to a rooftop viewing gallery
– A transparent dome offering 360-degree views of the heritage ensemble
– Two levels of underground parking accommodating approximately 60 vehicles
The project has been conceptualised with sensitivity to the heritage character of the precinct, complementing the existing Gothic Revival and Indo-Saracenic aesthetics. Green building principles will be adopted to minimise environmental impact.
“This is not just a building project, but a symbol of what modern Indian cities can aspire toโwhere heritage preservation, public participation, and climate-responsive architecture go hand-in-hand,” said an official associated with the planning department.
