The Avani Institute of Design recently hosted the traveling exhibition “Architectures of Transition: Emergent Practices in South Asia,” which showcases the work of 41 emerging architecture practices from across the region.
The exhibition, curated by renowned architects Rahul Mehrotra, Devashree Shah, and Pranav Thole, explores how architectural practices engage with the public realm through innovative methodologies, patronage, and construction techniques. It highlights participatory frameworks that address social and humane aspects of architecture in rapidly evolving socio-economic and environmental conditions.
According to Ar. Tony Joseph, Chairman of Avani Institute of Design, “Architecture has the power to adapt, respond, and create meaningful connections with people and places. This exhibition brings to light the evolving narratives of South Asia, where architects are shaping the future of communities through innovation and empathy.”
The exhibition is part of the broader research initiative, “State of Architecture in South Asia,” which probes the relevance and impact of architecture in a region undergoing significant transformations.
A presentation and panel discussion were held in conjunction with the exhibition, featuring key voices in the field, including Niranjan C Warrier, Reshma Mathew, Simi Sreedharan, and Hari Krishna. The discussion provided a platform for architects and urban designers to share insights into contemporary architectural challenges and innovations in the South Asian context.
The exhibition has been successfully showcased in New Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore, and will continue to tour other cities. It is supported by JSW, Prakriti Foundation, and Amardeep Design, with institutional partnerships including the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
