Apple plans to construct housing units for its factory employees in India, as part of its initiative to improve the workforce’s well-being and security. The project, largest of its kind, is expected to be completed by March 2025.
In a bid to improve the well-being of its workforce, Apple has unveiled plans to construct housing units for its factory employees in India. Over the past two and a half years, Apple has played a crucial role in job creation in the country, with more than 150,000 direct jobs generated. Now, the focus has been shifts towards providing better living arrangements for these employees, with the aim of ensuring efficiency, security, and overall welfare.
According to a report by The Economic Times, Apple’s housing initiative aligns with similar projects undertaken by its suppliers in countries like China and Vietnam. The plan involves building over 78,000 housing units under a public-private partnership scheme, making it the largest private sector initiative of its kind. The state of Tamil Nadu is slated to receive the majority of these units, approximately 58,000, with the state being home to the largest iPhone manufacturing plant in the country owned by Foxconn. In this big project, there are some important groups helping out. These groups include the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), Tata Group, and SPR India. They’re putting in money and effort to make sure the project finishes on time. They are getting help from the central government, state governments, and some business people who are putting in money too. The plan is to finish building the houses by March 31, 2025.
The houses are mainly for women who come from other places to work in the factories. Many of these women are between 19 and 24 years old. They make up a big part of the people who work in the factories. By building these houses close to where they work, Apple wants to help these workers. Right now, many of them have to travel long distances from where they rent homes to get to work.
Some other companies that work with Apple, like Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Salcomp, will also use these houses for their own workers. This project is part of Apple’s bigger plan to make its products in different places and not just in one country. They hope that by taking care of their workers and giving them good places to live, they can make their factories better and avoid problems they had in the past with shutting down factories and unhappy workers.
