The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts has unveiled The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary, introducing a refreshed identity for its luxury retreat in Coorg that places architecture, landscape and local heritage at the centre of the guest experience.
Spread across 76 acres of ancient forests and coffee plantations in the Western Ghats, the property has been reimagined as a nature-integrated retreat where built spaces are designed to coexist with the surrounding ecosystem. The project reflects a growing trend in luxury hospitality architecture, where developments are increasingly shaped by their natural context rather than imposing upon it.
The IGBC Platinum-certified retreat draws inspiration from Kodava heritage, traditional estate living and the rhythms of the forest. Contemporary architecture has been combined with local materials, indigenous craftsmanship and landscape-sensitive planning to create a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor environments. Expansive openings, natural textures and views of the forest canopy, coffee estates and water bodies have been incorporated throughout the property to strengthen the connection with nature.
The resort features 71 villas, including duplex, family and private pool villas, culminating in the four-bedroom Sunbeam Presidential Villa. Each accommodation has been designed to maximise privacy while framing views of the surrounding landscape, allowing the natural setting to become an integral part of the architectural experience.
Landscape design plays a defining role in the project, with a seven-acre lake serving as the visual and ecological focal point of the development. Walking trails, plantation paths, outdoor wellness spaces and carefully preserved green areas create a low-density environment that encourages guests to engage with the site’s biodiversity and topography.
The wellness facilities are housed within a 27,000 sq. ft. centre complemented by outdoor treatment pavilions and a Vinyasa Yoga Deck overlooking the lake. The integration of wellness spaces into the natural landscape reflects the increasing emphasis on biophilic design in luxury hospitality projects.
The food and beverage venues have also been planned to strengthen the sense of place. Luma, the all-day dining restaurant, overlooks the lake, while 92 Degrees celebrates Coorg’s coffee heritage through estate-inspired interiors and immersive coffee experiences. Other dining spaces, including Zen and The Cellar, combine contemporary design with materials and finishes that reflect the region’s cultural identity.
