Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) is set to design NOT A HOTEL’s inaugural vertex hotel in Okinawa, Japan. This marks one of the developer’s first hotel brands and ZHA’s first Japanese hotel project. The project aims to integrate innovative technology and design with Okinawa’s natural environment.
The hotel will be situated on a 273,000-square-foot site between a beachfront and forest, prioritizing preservation of the island’s coastal and marine ecosystems. Environmental considerations guide the hotel’s architectural design, engineering, site strategy, material selection, and construction processes.
The design employs modular structures and faรงade systems with prefabricated components, incorporating recycled aggregates from Okinawa’s redundant structures. The hotel’s layout features stepped terraces, courtyards, and gardens reflecting the site’s topography, with canopies and local materials like Okinawa pine, limestone, and ceramics referencing traditional vernacular architecture.
