New York-based Islyn Studio has designed the interiors of Uchiko, a Japanese restaurant in Miami Beach, blending “tropical brutalism with the elegance of Japanese deco”. The restaurant, located in Sunset Harbor, reflects both the cuisine and the context, with a design that combines multiple textured materials and hand-crafted elements.
The space features a black host stand wrapped in layers of woven fringe, influenced by Japanese thatched roofs, and a bar built from deep blue-green glass blocks that catch the light. The interior design juxtaposes raw and refined elements, reflecting the industrial yet elevated nature of the adjacent marina.
Japanese influences are visible throughout, from the woodwork joinery and details to the drapery and light fixtures. The restaurant’s private dining room features a fireplace surround formed of monolithic carved stone slabs, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere.
The design of Uchiko Miami Beach showcases a unique blend of tropical and Japanese influences, creating a space that feels like an escape while remaining deeply rooted in its marina-side setting.
