London-based WOO Architects and structures specialist ES Global have revealed the latest design for the UK pavilion at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan. The pavilion’s theme, “Come Build the Future,” was the result of a competition launched in June 2023.
The design features a fully dismantlable and relocatable modular system, making it easy to transport. The faรงade boasts perforated aluminium strands, inspired by early calculating machines and woven together using a technique reminiscent of the textile industries that fueled the 19th-century industrial revolutions in Manchester and Osaka.
WOO Architects, born out of the design team for the London 2012 Olympics, partnered with ES Global, specialists in sustainable structures. The design has undergone significant development since an earlier iteration was revealed in March 2024.
The six-month Expo event, running from April 13 to October 13, 2025, on Yumeshima Island, Osaka, will showcase the latest breakthroughs in science, technology, and culture from over 150 countries. More than 28 million people are expected to attend.
UK sponsors, announced today, include AstraZeneca, Aston Martin, IHG Hotels & Resorts, and the Welsh and Scottish governments.
UK Minister for Exports Gareth Thomas stated, “The UK has been a pioneer of innovation for generations. Our presence at the Osaka Expo will demonstrate the innovation and opportunities for exporting and growth in the United Kingdom.”
Emma Owens, Director of Culture and New Business at WOO Architects, added, “The Pavilion’s design celebrates Britain’s global reputation for innovation and creativity. We hope it inspires conversations about British resilience and industriousness for years to come.”
Tomoko Maekawa, Managing Director for Japan at ES Global, described the pavilion as “a wonderful showcase for our modular innovation,” designed by a “dynamic” Japanese-British team.
