Ribbed glass facades wrap the stepped silhouette of the Jia Art gallery in Shanghai, which was designed by British studio Foster + Partners to appear like a cluster of petals. Located in the Changfeng development of Shanghaiโs Putuo district, the Jia Art gallery Foster + Partners project draws from flowers in the nearby Changfeng park to shape its curved, outward-growing form. The gallery serves as the main social hub for the mixed-use district, anchoring public space with cultural programming and community facilities.
Petal Geometry
Drawing on the geometry of a blossoming flower, the gallery is characterized by its curvilinear form that appears to grow outwards from its centre,โ said Foster + Partners senior partner John Blythe. โThe buildingโs inherent symmetry establishes a sense of calm and balance in this fast-paced city.โ The Jia Art gallery Foster + Partners design uses a staggered profile that steps upward, creating terraces and cantilevered volumes over the plaza. This geometry supports daylight control and defines a clear sequence from arrival to exhibition.
A double-height atrium divides Jia Art in two, drawing natural light into the exhibition spaces. The main galleries are located in the northern end of the building, and the southern side contains exhibition, event, and educational spaces designed for the local community to gather. The Jia Art gallery Foster + Partners plan prioritizes accessibility and flexibility, allowing the venue to host art shows, workshops, and civic events within one continuous flow. Circulation routes link interior galleries with outdoor public areas to encourage daily use.
โJia Art is a project that demonstrates the significance of embedding art and culture in our cities,โ said Foster + Partners founder Norman Foster. โIt will bring life to the public spaces, nurturing a sense of community identity, while playing an important role in integrating our new Changfeng development into the wider fabric of Shanghai.โ The Jia Art gallery Foster + Partners team used this civic intent to guide massing, sightlines, and program adjacencies, ensuring the building acts as both destination and neighborhood amenity. Material Language. The buildingโs upper levels step outwards and cantilever over the public space outside. Tubular glass creates a ribbed effect in the buildingโs facades, framed by curved stainless steel tubes that run up the walls and around the undersides of the roof and cantilevers. The detailing gives the Jia Art gallery Foster + Partners elevation depth and rhythm while modulating glare and reflection. Inside, the atrium echoes the exterior with walls of steel tubes cascading over balconies, unifying structure, enclosure, and interior experience.
Foster + Partners has recently completed other cultural projects including the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, topped with soaring ventilation towers, and plans for a sculpture garden beside the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Jia Art gallery Foster + Partners project continues the studioโs focus on civic buildings that integrate landscape, daylight, and material precision. Photography is courtesy of Foster + Partners. With its ribbed tubular glass and curved steel frame, the Jia Art gallery Foster + Partners building positions culture at the centre of the Changfeng masterplan. The stepped form mediates between park scale and urban density, while the double-height atrium and community spaces make art visible and accessible from the street. The project reinforces Shanghaiโs Putuo district as a destination for exhibitions, education, and public life.
