At the recently concluded Design Mumbai event, Tejaswini Paranjape, interacted with Bimal Gautam, Founder and CEO of Muura and the exclusive representative of Blรฅ Station in India. It is a family-owned Swedish design house founded in 1986 in ร
hus. Known for combining Swedish design integrity with innovation and craftsmanship, Blรฅ Station showcased its contemporary furniture offerings and shared insights into global design trends, its market positioning, and the challenges of entering new geographies, including India.ย
During the conversation, Gautam highlighted that European and global commercial furniture trends remain largely design-driven. Brands in Europe typically begin new product cycles with extensive collaboration with designers and significant research and development before launching at trade events. This design-first approach ensures that new collections are refined, functional, and aligned with market expectations. According to Gautam, this focus on design and R&D distinguishes the European market from other regions where product launches often emphasize speed over innovation.
Blรฅ Station positions itself firmly in the premium segment, catering to carefully selected spaces rather than high-volume mass-market deployments. โWe pick our spot in any office, airport or retail where itโs the clientele areas,โ Gautam said, adding that the company prefers locations where visitors expect higher comfort levels and well-crafted seating. The company noted that offices and hospitality spaces are increasingly adopting similar design sensibilities. Colourful sofas, chairs, and armchairs tradition Baally associated with hospitality are now being used in offices, airports, and other public spaces to create a more relaxed and welcoming environment.
Architects and designers remain central to Blรฅ Stationโs strategy, with Gautam describing them as the brandโs ambassadors. The company introduces its collections to design professionals first, who then influence client decisions and help establish brand visibility. While collaborations with designers have not presented challenges, financial constraints among end consumers were acknowledged as a limiting factor in broader adoption, with gradual growth expected in India as the market matures.
On sustainability, Gautam noted that Blรฅ Station holds several certifications, including cradle-to-cradle and circularity-related licences. These credentials are publicly available on the companyโs website or can be provided on request, underscoring the brandโs commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
Regarding the Indian market specifically, Gautam highlighted import-related and regulatory challenges. โOur government is not import friendly,โ he said, pointing to policies that favour local manufacturing. The company marked its debut at Design Mumbai and is planning showrooms in Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad to establish an initial presence. However, he clarified that setting up local manufacturing in India is not feasible due to differences in materials, craftsmanship, and labour practices. โIt is difficult to ask a company like Blรฅ Station to come and do manufacturing in India. What is done in Sweden cannot be done in India,โ Mr. Gautam explained, referencing the geographic and material-specific conditions that define the brandโs production standards.Globally, Blรฅ Station is adopting a cautious expansion strategy, taking measured steps into new markets such as China and Japan. โWe are taking one step at a time; we are not in a rush,โ Gautam said, indicating a deliberate approach to growth that prioritizes brand integrity and product quality over rapid expansion.
The interaction provided insight into how Blรฅ Station is navigating its entry into India while maintaining its premium positioning, emphasizing design-led development, sustainability credentials, and careful global expansion. The companyโs measured approach reflects both the opportunities and challenges international brands face in adapting to new markets while preserving core Swedish design principles.
