The Coimbatore International Airport is set to undergo a significant expansion with a new integrated terminal building that’s four times bigger than the existing one. The proposed terminal will span 75,000 square meters, up from the current 18,000 square meters. It will handle 4,200 peak-hour passengers and feature a new apron for 14 aircraft bays, parallel taxi track, and link taxiway. The terminal will have segregated departures for international and domestic flights.
The Tamil Nadu government has handed over 605 acres of land out of the 627 acres requested by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the airport expansion project. A joint survey by AAI and state authorities is currently underway to validate the land. Construction of a compound wall for the land already handed over to AAI is expected to be completed by September 26, with a total length of about 16 km.
After the completion of the joint survey and construction of the compound wall, the final design is expected to be completed within five months. The validation of the land is essential for the finalization of the design. With the expansion, the airport’s passenger capacity is expected to increase significantly.
