Heatherwick Studio has transformed the heart of Xi’an, China, with the Xi’an Centre Culture Business District (CCBD), a mixed-use project blending commercial offices, cultural spaces, luxury residences, and retail areas. The design reflects the city’s rich cultural heritage, featuring over 100,000 handcrafted ceramic tiles and collaborations with local artisans.
The CCBD is designed to foster community engagement, sustainability, and cultural significance, with open plazas, green areas, and a vertical park called the Xi’an Tree. This 57-meter-tall structure features 56 elevated terraces with cascading gardens representing different biomes of the historic Silk Road.
The project showcases a blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, with features like hand-carved timber railings and glazed ceramic lift buttons. The design philosophy emphasizes fluidity, movement, and interaction, enhancing Xi’an’s role in the world.
