The City of Darwin has revealed a proposal for a new $150 million civic centre, designed by CA Architects. The new building, located on the southern point of the city’s peninsula, will replace the existing hub, which has been in service for over 50 years.
According to Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis, “The new civic centre features a larger library, meeting rooms, function spaces, new council chambers, space for a cafe, and an improved customer service centre.” To ensure the current building and library remain open during construction, the new civic centre will be built on the adjacent car park site.
The 20-storey tower will accommodate City of Darwin offices, customer service, a new library, and community space. The remaining floors will be designated for commercial office space. The historic Banyan tree, Galamarrma, the Tree of Knowledge, will be retained and protected throughout construction.
The project is expected to commence in the 2025 dry season, with completion scheduled for 2028. Local contractor DCOH has been selected to deliver the new civic centre, following an expressions of interest period in December 2023.
