The Western Australian Government has announced plans for the renovation of the Perth Concert Hall, a heritage-listed venue that has been a cornerstone of the cityโs cultural scene for 51 years. Designed by architects Jeffrey Howlett and Don Bailey, the hall will undergo significant upgrades led by OMA’s Australian office in partnership with Perth-based WITH Architecture Studio. The renovation is set to commence in early 2025, with the goal of modernizing facilities for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) and enhancing visitor experience through new public spaces, improved amenities, and upgraded seating.
Completed in 1973, the Perth Concert Hall was the first major concert hall built in Australia after World War II. Its Brutalist architecture features off-form concrete, an innovative choice at the time, creating the buildingโs distinctive textured surfaces. The renovation, part of a larger initiative to bolster Western Australiaโs arts infrastructure, was first announced in 2022, with OMA Australia and WITH Architecture Studio chosen to spearhead the project.
The new design will allow for direct access to the level-two lobby from both the north and south entrances, while the surrounding podium plinth will be restored and stabilized. The currently neglected north plaza will be revitalized into a public forecourt, complete with a “red carpet” walkway made from recycled brick paving, echoing the iconic red carpet of the foyer and guiding visitors from Perth’s central business district along St. Georges Terrace straight into the lobby. Additionally, new staircases and a lift will provide access to the level-two lobby from the south, overlooking the Swan River. (Source:archdaily.com)
