Norway is building the world’s longest and deepest underwater tunnel, the Rogaland fixed link (Rogfast), under its fjords. The 26.7 km long tunnel will reach 390 m below sea level.
The Rogfast project aims to reduce travel time between Stavanger and Bergen by 40 minutes. The tunnel will be part of the European E39 highway, replacing ferry crossings and enhancing connectivity.
Key Features:
– Two lanes of traffic in each direction
– Roundabouts under the island of Kvitsøy, 260 m below sea level
– Twin tube structure for safety and traffic flow
– Camera system for emergency response
The tunnel is being built using drilling and blasting methods, ensuring stability and durability under water pressure. Norway’s experience with subsea tunnels has made this method more cost-effective than building bridges.
Benefits:
– Reduced travel time for workers and industry
– Improved seafood production and transportation
– Increased tourism opportunities
The Rogfast fixed link is scheduled for completion by summer 2033, with an estimated 13,000 daily journeys by 2053.
