Sotheby’s, the international auction house, has finalized its $100 million purchase of the former Met Breuer building in New York. The iconic Brutalist structure, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1966, will undergo a “sensitive adaptation and renovation” led by Herzog & de Meuron. The project aims to deliver world-class gallery space for Sotheby’s diverse offerings.
Jacques Herzog emphasized the importance of working with existing buildings, stating, “The Breuer Building is an amazing architectural icon of postwar modernism… We will approach the project with excitement and respect for its original vision.” The renovation will include redesigned auction rooms, a new restaurant, and revamped exhibition spaces. Herzog & de Meuron will collaborate with PBDW Architects on the project.
The renovation is slated for completion in fall 2025. Sotheby’s will maintain ownership of its current headquarters at 1334 York Avenue and continue hosting exhibitions and auctions there until the Breuer building’s refurbishment concludes. Herzog noted, “By reviving lost spaces… and doing subtle interventions, the building will be prepared for its new role in the auction world—and will also be more accessible again for visitors and the people of New York.”
