Developers have unveiled plans for a new building that will replace the famous Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo’s Ginza district. The project, financed by Accor, a global hospitality leader, will feature a flagship hotel for the Pullman brand.
The replacement tower will boast 145 guest rooms, an all-day dining restaurant, a destination bar, and other amenities. Its modular exterior will feature a striking gold lacquer finish, contrasting with the building it replaces. Accor has not yet disclosed the architects working on the project.
The demolition of Nakagin Capsule Tower began in 2022, following years of maintenance issues. The tower’s capsules have been scattered worldwide, with some on display in museums such as Rome’s MAXXI and Japan’s Museum of Modern Art Saitama.
Kisho Kurokawa & Associates, the original architects, have relocated several capsules to an off-site location for conservation. A digital model of the tower has also been created, paving the way for potential reconstruction in the future.
The new hotel is slated to open in late 2027.
