Colby College has chosen Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to design its new $300 million science complex, set to open in 2030. The complex will feature 200,000 square feet of teaching and research laboratories, classrooms, offices, and gathering spaces, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
“The design team from SOM is world class,” says David A. Greene, President, Colby College. “Their work showcases deep knowledge of scientific research and teaching, sector-leading sustainability practices, and beautiful structures that inspire creative work.”
SOM’s notable projects include the New York Climate Exchange, Wellesley College Science Complex, and MIT’s Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing. The firm aims to create a building that integrates with the landscape, blurring disciplinary boundaries and encouraging collaboration.

The complex will support applied fields like biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, and materials science, empowering students to address pressing challenges.
